THE END OF THE LAW
THE END OF THE LAW By Matthew bidinlib For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. - Romans 10:4 The law was given to Israel so that they would live by it, in other words, it was given to bring life. That is why Paul described the righteousness that came by the law in this wise; the man who does it, will live by it i.e. it was to bring or impact life in a perilous nation. In other for the law to give life, the people must do all that it says (Thou shall not do this or that). Therefore we can say that the end of the law is life but the law could not impact this life, not because the law was bad, for the law was good. For by their fruits thou shall know them. And since God is a good God, then all He does is surely God. “Romans 7:7 wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.” The only problem was the people. They were always faulty by the standards of the law. The law required absolute obedience which the people could not meet (For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: Hebrews 8:8). They could not live to that standard and therefore instead of gaining life by the obedience of the law, their sins showed the more by their disobedience. God does not changes and therefore, the standards he set for the law could also not be changed. But because He does not take pleasure in the death of anyone, then God must use another means to give man life. THE NEED FOR JESUS? When Jesus came, he told the People that he did not come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it (Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. Matthew 5:17). To fulfill something is to make it happened or come to pass. So Jesus came to make the reason of the law come to pass: He came so that the life which the law of god is design to impact but could not do because of the people, that life will come to pass. Christ came with a much more glorious law: the law of the Spirit of life. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.- Romans 8:2 and this life is not acquired by thou shall do or shall not but it is received by “ Thou shall believe”- For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, "The man who does those things shall live by them. But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down from above) or, "'Who will descend into the abyss?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.- Romans 10:5-9 We see that, the original intent of the law was to bring life, but the people must work for that life; the man who does (who works for it) will life by them (will have life). He who is not able to do what the law says will surely not live Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD- Leviticus 18:5 And I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them- Ezekiel 20:11. Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.- Proverbs 7:2 Jesus came to establish this life not in terms of our merit but according to grace. The righteousness that come with him therefore is not the righteousness that we merit with our own effort but it is a freely given one. So the final law that Jesus brought to fulfill all the law is “THOU SHALL BELIEVE”- Romans 10:6-11. Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus- Romans 3:24. Therefore in bringing life, Jesus came to establish the main aim of the law (Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law-Romans 3:31). Paul says that Sin shall no more be our master for we are no more under the law but under grace- ROM 6:14. In other words, we no more behold the law by which we will all appear faulty but we now behold Jesus who speaks grace and mercy. On the Cross of Calvary, Jesus cried out “It is finished”- John 19:30. What was he talking about? Was it the beatings and pain they were inflicting on him? No! The law is finished. In other words, the law has been fulfilled. The life that the people were trying to gain is now for free. No more dependency on efforts but on Jesus CONCLUSION The law was pointing to life, that is: the aim of the law was life and Jesus came to give this life in abundance. Therefore Jesus is the end of the law. As many as believe no more live according to the law which will always condemn you as guilty, but we now live by the fullness of the law which is Jesus. The law gave the people a lot of problems but the fullness of the law brought liberation. May this Jesus mark an end to all your troubles. It is finished. evangmatthew.blogspot.com
